UNESCO - IHE
UNESCO - IHE Delft

UNESCO-IHE is an international graduate water education facility in the city centre of Delft. Four interconnected buildings, cover an area of 14,000 square metres, extending from the main entrance in a building from the 90’s, to the historic buildings with monumental status along the canal.
The renovation by Fokkema & Partners was executed with minimal funds, aiming to update the facility to today’s standards, complying with the temporary nature of the occupation by UNESCO - IHE. The new layout enables a contemporary education- and work concept with flexible use. On the ground floor the library has become a monumental public area. On the first floor two auditoriums and a foyer can accommodate large groups. Two office floors for PhD students and professors are arranged according to the new ways of working with lounge seats, meeting rooms, telephone booths and flexible desks. The design of the public area communicates the theme’s water, sustainability and the international character of both the theme’s and the students.
Energy-efficiency was a main point of interest taking into account budget and temporary challenges. Creative and realistic solutions resulted in an optimized performance on the energy label from the label G to C. The renovation has resulted in an efficient, sustainable, tranquil and fresh design.
During construction the institute stayed at the premises.
