For the design of the booking.com office at the Piet Heinkade in Amsterdam, the international firm HLW teamed up with Fokkema & Partners to create a vibrant work environment and restaurant. The design for over 1000 staff showcases many different atmospheres, referring to the experiences of a traveller and to the history of Amsterdam. Fokkema & Partners was responsible for the elaboration of the design and the design management of 14.500 m2 office space in accordance with the corporate identity of booking.com.
Colourful and unique “neigbourhoods” provide orientation, incorporating meeting spaces as well as phone booths and places to concentrate. In line with the agile working concept, various types of (stand-up) presentations are facilitated, formal to informal, some in open space. Work area’s for the teams and departments are complemented with cosy “living rooms” to break out. All interventions are bold and well executed, from installation design to styling.
One of the themes connecting the colourful atmospheres throughout the design, is the reference in the flooring to the logistics of the cruise docks. Yellow lines on the grey pathways are characteristic to this densely occupied office which is set beside the Amsterdam cruise terminal. A multi-use area with table tennis tables and cosy seats is located in the office area that connects the building cores with the restaurant and conference centre, making optimal use of all of all of the office space. The restaurant at first level and the (coffee)bar at the 7th floor have amazing views over the IJ-river, besides giving a cosy and highly connected feel, as if you are working while on a city trip.
