Moermansk 300 and 400 are part of a new series of iconic buildings marking the redevelopment of the harbour area ‘Houthaven’. Along Moermanskkade the spacious lobbies of 300 and 400 give access to various creative companies, operating in the fields of technology, mobility, fashion, design, architecture and urbanism, forming a new creative hub in Amsterdam.
Fokkema & Partners was tasked to design the representative shared spaces and wayfinding for the creative companies in both multi-tenant buildings. The choice was made to execute both lobbies in the same style and with maintaining a raw atmosphere to do justice to the wide views on the water with huge cargo ships passing by.
Large white surfaces are inserted in the raw concrete building hulls and fold seamlessly to make a refined backdrop to the minimalistic pieces of custom furniture. From flooring to wallcovering to signing, the surfaces provide a sense of place and a clear signature.
As a part of this project, FOKLAb was commisioned to develop two unique objects: the Rugged Elm and the Ripple. Both pieces convey a bold interpretation of the history of the site, while complementing the gallery inspired Lobby spaces with a design that allows the spaces to be used as a meeting area. Both tables are carefully anchored in their context and, due to their unique design, are on the brink of artwork and functional design.
