The design for the Global Foods Innovation Centre of Unilever at the campus in Wageningen obtained the highest possible sustainability certification from the Dutch Green Building Council, a BREEAM-NL Outstanding certificate. The integral focus on creating the most healthy environment for users and the surroundings is supported with smart integration of technology. This led to obtaining one of the highest BREEAM scores worldwide for research buildings, completely in line with the high ambitions of Unilever in terms of sustainability.

The Global Foods Innovation Center will measure 18,000 m2 which includes a Pilot Plant, a Food & Customer Experience and two floors with offices and laboratories. In the Pilot Plant, a mini-factory, the trial production of new products takes place in limited volumes. The situation of the building at the Wageningen University & Research (WUR) campus puts it at among the Agri Food eco-system, with the aim to increase the impact of Unilever R&D through collaboration.

The way of integrating various functions into a single building with an inspiring work environment is aimed to stimulate knowledge exchange between Unilever, the WUR, knowledge centers, NGO’s, start-ups and other companies involved in the global search for healthy and sustainable foods innovations. Innovative techniques and an efficient layout to stimulate movement and meeting are part of the key design principles elaborated for Unilever to contribute to health and well-being of the environment, the employees and users of the building.

With construction on the new build also topping out, there were two highlights to celebrate on august 30th. Paul Polman (CEO Unilever) was joined on site for official celebration of these milestones by the design and construction teams of the building partners* as well as campus' and other Agri Food representatives. In close collaboration with Paul de Ruiter Architects, Fokkema & Partners Architecten is responsible for the complete interior concept and design of the Global Foods Innovation Centre.
